The catalog was built for a search problem

Data catalogs emerged to solve a real but narrow problem: with thousands of tables and dashboards scattered across the enterprise, how do you find the one you need? Search, tags and a description field were sufficient answers to that question.

But 'find the right table' is no longer the operative question. Enterprises now need systems that can answer 'is this safe to use,' 'what breaks if I change this,' and 'what should an AI agent be allowed to do with this' — questions a search index was never designed to answer.

An operating system, not an index

An operating system's job is to mediate access to resources for many programs at once, enforcing rules and coordinating shared state. That is a much closer description of what modern data platforms need to do for AI agents, applications and human users simultaneously than 'searchable inventory' ever was.

A Context OS architecture — a live graph of assets, relationships, policies and quality signals, exposed through APIs rather than only a search UI — is what makes it possible for governance, discovery, semantic intelligence and AI agents to all operate against one consistent, real-time source of truth instead of five tools that drift out of sync.

What changes in practice

In a catalog-centric architecture, governance policy, lineage and semantic definitions often live in separate systems that are periodically synchronized — and quietly diverge. In a Context OS architecture, they are properties and relationships on the same graph, updated once and immediately consistent everywhere they're consumed, including by AI agents making real-time decisions.

Why this matters now, specifically

This architectural shift was optional when the only consumers of catalog metadata were humans doing occasional searches. It stops being optional once AI agents are making dozens of context-dependent decisions per second on an organization's behalf — at that point, only a live, queryable, consistent context layer can keep up, which is exactly why this shift is happening across the industry now rather than five years ago.
